When It Rains, It Pours

When It Rains....
It is 3:10 in the a.m. as I sit here on the edge of my chair, with my shoulder blades leaning against the back of the chair for support, and my arms stretched out to reach the keys of the keyboard. All the while, my left arm resting on the arm of the chair as I type to relieve the pressure from my back.

It has been 43 hours since my limp body has left it's basement headquarters consisting of a green blanket sprawled out on the basement floor, a king size heating pad keeping it warm, and a t.v. remote that has been working non-stop.

After watching the entire twelfth season of the Amazing Race, I decided it was time to make a move. Literally. It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be, going up the stairs. At least not like the first time. I managed to make it and goto the bathroom by myself without any tears of embarrassment or pain, get a drink of water, fish out an eyelash that had been harassing my eye, and now sit at the computer.

It was Saturday morning that I finally got around to clearing the corn (remember the corn? the corn that the stupid wind blew over?) from the garden. (Yes, we did get some corn from our garden.) As I was pulling the stalks out of the ground, pain pierced my lower back like it never has before. It was a paralyzing pain. It was sharp, and it took everything I had to get to door, open it, and call for help. With all of my weight on the little door knob, I called down the stairs to Kurt, who happened to be in the shower. Gavin heard my cry for help, and I told him to go get dad. All I hear is "Dad, Mom." then, "Get out Gav." (you know cuz he's in the shower.) My two year isn't quite getting the message across that his mom is in excruciating pain. Then I see Gavin dart back to the couch to watch his Saturday morning cartoons. "Gav! Go get Dad! NOW.", I yell. I see his little body run back to the bathroom door that he left open. This time he yells, "Dad, Mom!" Kurt retorts, "Shut the door!" There was a brief pause and I was able to call down. Because his head was outside of the shower curtain he heard my cry. He sensed something was wrong, grabbed a towel and come to my rescue.

He managed to get me inside the door, where there I fell to my hands and knees, and where I stayed for the next 20 minutes. After Kurt got ready for work, and I mustard up the courage to move my hurt body downstairs. Kurt helped me to my headquarters and got me situated before he had to goto work. Luckily, Auntie Lisa offered to take Isaac and Owen for an overnighter the night before and she was able to keep them until Kurt got off work.

I have never in all my years hurt my back or any part of my body like I did Saturday morning. I compare it to childbirth without having an epidural. (Yes, it hurt that bad.) The only thing I could do was lay there. I was down for the count. Even if I wanted to, I couldn't move. So there I laid, until now. Where I am sitting at the computer typing. I started to feel pain about half way through this story. It is times like this that I wish we had wireless internet. It is here that I will end my story for now. I will continue my saga at another time. But I will leave you with this.....

Before Kurt left for work Saturday morning, after getting me situated, he says, "Man, my tongue is numb. I think it was that asparagus I ate at the restaurant last night. It's crazy, you know how when you goto the dentist and you mouth feels all fat from being numb? That's what my tongue feels like."

HA! Kurt... it sounds like Richard... but hewould not have been as helpful.
Wish that I was there to help. I had to get some muscle relaxers to get through my back injury. Look into that!!!

Oh no! That sucks, I'm so sorry! My sister has major back problems too, & also swears by the muscle relaxers.

Kanani, I poppped over from Dani's blog. Okay listen! I have back probs sometimes. My WORST ever (breathing even hurt) was a sublixated rib and a chiropractor had to fix it. Otherwise, it is seriously all about RESTING and loading up on ibuprofren to relax your back. Half of the problem in keeping it relaxed is to keep the muscles relaxed, otherwise they pull your back out again. Good luck. Glad I could pop over to pretend to be your doctor. Bye! Amber A.

Thanks for all the comments and advice. I have definitely been eating Ibuprofren like candy. But am now out....need to send Kurt to the store. And yes, rest is a MUST!

Carrie: Thanks for the offer. I may call you. Depends on what time Kurt gets home today. He may get off early.

I wonder if you have kidney stones, thats exactly what I felt like. Is it kind of like a pulsing pain like when you're in labor? Is it making you throw up? Maybe you should go get it checked out . . .

Next time you have fallen and you can't get up, call me and I will bring you some food so you don't have to do anything rash like, oh I don't know, maybe crawl to the storage room to find some food. I would hate to have you stranded in there all by your lonesome!
