Snaggle Tooth

How cool is today's technology!

This is a digital picture/x-ray of Isaac's front teeth. One year ago he had the same x-ray done, but it wasn't digital and it was very hard to make out exactly what you were looking at. This picture really is amazing. What's even more amazing is Isaac has an extra front tooth, or a supernumerary if you will. It is not rare to have an extra tooth, but it is not very common either.

To better understand what you are looking at: This is looking at Isaac's 2 big front teeth as if you were standing behind him. Comprende'? You can see his left permanent front tooth just waiting to break through. (He has not yet lost any baby teeth-weird huh? The kid will be 7 in May. I thought so too, but the Doc says it's normal?.) Then right next to it in the middle of the 2 permanant teeth is the supernumerary. Looking at the tooth on the right, this is his other permanent tooth. See how it doesn't look as pretty as the one on the left. The supernumerary has shifted it to the point where it has turned it 180 degrees. Instead of sitting like a normal tooth with the flat part in the front, it is turned so the flat part of the tooth is completely sideways. Like I said, turned 180 degrees. If he doesn't get the supernumerary removed, not only would the extra tooth come in causing all kinds of problems, but his permanant tooth would be completely out of whack!

So, Thursday, Isaac will be making the ever dreaded feat of visiting Dr. Doom and his drill. He will be cutting the gum pulling it back and removing the extra tooth that is beginning to protrude behind Isaac's normal set of teeth. And with fingers crossed his mangled permanent tooth will twist it's way back into place. Braces are definitely in this kid's future!

When I was a young tyke I had I think 2 extra front teeth or something...I just remember that they had to go in and take 2 teeth out of my front gums. Oh and I had bad warts on my private areas, and I still have those reallly bad.

wow that is weird. I didn't know that people could have extra teeth like that. I knew some people didn't have permanent teeth underneath some of their baby ones, but extra ones this is the first I've heard of that. I'll have to show Cory this picture he'll think it's cool! He's all in to that Dentistry stuff for some reason ;)

Cort-Oh, My! I am so sorry to hear of your infectuous wart disease. I hear that rubbing clorox bleach on them makes them go away.

Kristin-no permanent teeth, never heard of that one. Appearantly this picture was a must see at the office. All the interns and techs. were loving it.

that is a strange one I've never heard of. cool x-ray though. took me a minute to look at it right. My youngest sister has no permanent eye teeth. - she has to get fakes or a retainer that has two fake teeth attached to it. too many weird things...

What kind of image did he get? Was it x-ray, 3D cone beam, CT scan, tomographic....

Where did he get it done?

Sarah: It is a 3D image. They did it just like an x-ray, where you bite down on the bite wing thingy, and then they move the camera around and snap the shot.

Dr. Wittwer is the dentist he saw at a Kids Place. We saw him downtown, but he has an office in Murray. (Don't know if they have the same tech. at the Murray office).

But he is absolutely the BEST doc. I have found in terms of listening to what you have to say, making you/kid feel comfortable, explaining things, not one of those wham bam thank you ma'am type of docs. I really appreciated that fact about him.

Oh boy...I have some serious empathy for the boy. I just got my six wisdom teeth out yesterday and I am in some SERIOUS pain! Better luck to him.
